Best Water-Based Lubes (2026): Compared by Published pH, Osmolality and Ingredients
Water-based lube is the safe default for most couples. It works with every condom material in common use (with one exception, covered below), it's safe with silicone toys, and it washes off easily.38 But water-based lubes vary a lot in two numbers most labels don't show: pH and osmolality. Those two numbers matter if you're prone to irritation.
This is a research-based roundup. We compared four water-based lubes on the data their makers publish, checked on 25 October 2026, and measured it against the WHO's guidance. We haven't laboratory-tested these products or rated how they feel. See how we research.
General information, not medical advice. If you have recurring irritation, pain or infections, talk to a clinician.
The two numbers to know
Osmolality measures how concentrated a liquid is. A lube far more concentrated than body fluids can draw water out of the cells lining the vagina or rectum. The WHO/UNFPA/FHI360 advisory says a lubricant ideally shouldn't exceed 380 mOsm/kg. It sets 1,200 mOsm/kg as an interim upper limit for procurement, and notes that glycol content (glycerol, propylene glycol) is the main driver of osmolality.1
pH: the WHO recommends about pH 4.5 for vaginal use and 5.5–7 for anal use, and doesn't recommend lubricants above pH 7.1
A 2012 PLOS ONE laboratory study of 14 over-the-counter lubes found that six of the 10 water-based gels were hyperosmolar. The study linked hyperosmolar products to damage in tissue samples. The two nearly iso-osmolar water-based gels were among the safest in its tests.2 For background, see our lube guide.

1. Desert Harvest Aloe Glide: most complete published data
Why it's here: Aloe Glide publishes both key numbers: iso-osmolar at 308 mOsm/kg and pH 4.5. Both sit within the WHO's ideal range for vaginal use.41 It names its condom compatibility (latex and polyisoprene) and describes itself as an FDA-cleared medical device.4
- Base: organic aloe vera, with xanthan gum, licorice root and marshmallow root extracts, citric acid, potassium sorbate and a natural preservative blend.4
- Storage quirk: the maker says marshmallow root can change the texture below freezing, and advises against refrigeration.4
- Returns: listed as "final sale" for hygiene reasons.4
Fact-check note: Desert Harvest's page says "the WHO recommends 260–380 mOsm/kg". The WHO advisory we read sets 380 mOsm/kg as the ideal upper limit and 1,200 as an interim procurement limit. It doesn't set a 260 floor.1 Aloe Glide's own 308 figure is within the ideal range either way.
2. Good Clean Love Almost Naked: published pH and osmolality range
Why it's here: Good Clean Love publishes a pH of 4.0–4.4 and osmolality of 250–400 mOsmol/kg.5 The top of that range slightly exceeds the WHO's ideal 380 limit, but it's far below the 1,200 interim limit, and the range is published, which is rare.1
- Ingredients: organic aloe leaf juice, xanthan gum, agar, a "proprietary lactic acid blend", potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, natural flavour.5
- Claims to treat cautiously: the brand calls it "the first lube proven to be gentle on the vaginal microbiome".5 We didn't find the underlying study linked on the page, so we treat this as a marketing claim.
- Condoms: the page we checked doesn't state condom compatibility. Water-based lubes are generally latex-safe,3 but confirm with the maker if you rely on condoms.
3. YES water-based: glycerin-free, with a clear condom statement
Why it's here: YES lists every ingredient and says it's free from glycerine, parabens and propylene glycol, and 95% certified organic.6 Its FDA 510(k) clearance spells out condom compatibility precisely: compatible with latex and polyisoprene, not compatible with polyurethane.7
- Ingredients: aqua, flax extract, aloe vera leaf juice powder, guar gum, locust bean gum, sodium chloride, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, citric acid, phenoxyethanol.6
- Shelf life: use within 4 months of opening, which the maker attributes to avoiding harsh preservatives.6
- Gap: the page says "osmotically optimised" and "pH matched", but gives no numbers. Ask the maker if you need them.
4. pjur AQUA: widely available, toy- and condom-friendly
Why it's here: pjur AQUA is a mainstream option with a clear compatibility statement: "Compatible with latex and polyisoprene condoms" and "suitable for sex toys". It's made without perfume or added flavours.8
- Ingredients: aqua, glycerin, ethoxydiglycol, phenoxyethanol, hydroxypropyl guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, hydroxyethylcellulose, citric acid.8
- Gap: no published osmolality or pH. Because it contains glycerin, and the WHO identifies glycols as the main driver of osmolality,1 people prone to irritation may prefer a lube that publishes its numbers.
Why water-based is the default with toys
Many silicone toy makers specifically ask for water-based lube:
- We-Vibe's Pivot manual: "Do not use with silicone lubricants because they will damage the product."9
- LELO: silicone-based lubricants "may make the silicone permanently tacky".10
All four lubes above are water-based, so they're the safe pick with silicone toys. For condoms, see our lube for condoms guide.
How to choose
| If you… | Prioritise | From this list |
|---|---|---|
| Get irritation easily | Published osmolality near body fluids; pH about 4.5 | Aloe Glide; Almost Naked |
| Use polyurethane condoms | A lube that explicitly allows polyurethane | Not YES water-based. Ask the others' makers |
| Want glycerin-free | Ingredient list without glycerin or glycols | Aloe Glide; Almost Naked; YES |
| Want low price and easy availability | Mainstream brand; clear condom and toy statement | pjur AQUA |
| Use it for anal sex | pH 5.5–7 per WHO; consider silicone for longevity | Check pH; see silicone lubes |
Tip: if a product doesn't publish osmolality or pH, it isn't necessarily unsafe. It just means you can't check. Brands that publish these figures make an informed choice easier.
